Fixing mp3 downloads

How to fix window's dumb behavior with mp3 files..

The fix.
  • open "My Computer"
  • open "Folder Options" (most likely under tools menu, but could be Options under the View menu)
  • Click on the "file types" tab (could be registered file types).
  • scroll down until you find mp3 and select it
  • click on advanced
  • Select "open" from the actions, then click the "set as default" button
  • check the "confirm open after download" box
  • click ok
Why do I have to do this?

Windows likes to open items 'inline', so when you click on an MP3 file, or word document or pdf etc it will try to open it right in the browser instead of asking you to save it. For the geeky: Windows actually looks at the file, not the MIME type when deciding what to do with a file. There are some work arounds that can be done so that a download prompt is forced on a file windows wants to display, but they are not guarnteed to work on all browsers, plus most people want to download an mp3 and know where it went rather than have their browser play it and save it in some unknown temp file.
